http://www.esckaz.com/new/enWell, it's time to bid farewell to Kyiv. A member of Maltese delegation confirmed to us Malta is 95% certain to host 2014 edition of the show but still has some paperwork to be done for the official confirmation, which probably will come in the next month.
It is highly unlikely that ESCKAZ team will be covering the 2014 edition of the contest due to the costs of production and general lack of interest, however, we stay open for all kinds of proposals as both to our team in full, or to it's members.
We're pretty much satisfied with our work in Kyiv and with the work of organizers. It has been a huge step forward comparing to 2009, and only a small step back from flawless level of Amsterdam organization.
ESCKAZ has again proved being the top unofficial site this year (and for the 7th year now). I usually stress on this myself, but now I will quote executive producer Roman Keryk: "It is very unfortunate that only few journalists like you are here to work, and not just to create the impression that they work". It is exactly how most of the people behave here in press-center, most of them do not do the work themselves, and just try to create obstacles to others. NTU/EBU have been also too open for allowing so many fans to the contest, without checking their background and asking what they were intending to do there. Smaller but more dedicated press-center would have helped to raise the quality of our work.
A huge disadvantage in organization were the stairs in Ukraine Palace. I am only barely alive after going on 6th floor every day at least 10 times. I admire Roman Keryk for losing 40 kilos of his weight during preparations for the show. The idea to locate everything on one floor also didn't really work well due to the huge noise stage has been delivering to the press-center. The press-conferences, on my opinion, were totally useless. At least they should have been streamed live to make any value, and I hope EBU does this next year.
On positive note I would like to note the amazing assistance of all organizers - EBU - Vlad and Kath, NTU - Victoria, Roman, Liliya, representatives of Euromedia and everyone else, who have been really helpful in every aspect. The team work has been just great and an excellent example for the future.
I think the stage this year has been amazing as is the picture of the show in general, great graphics. Kudos to all responsible for technical aspects and production of the show itself. In TV broadcast this has been on par with the best JESCs in history.
The selection of guest acts, bar Emmelie who hardly fitted the Ukrainian magic show, has been superb. Excellent music and performance of Zlata, and special appearance of Nastya Petryk. A huge failure of course has been that Ruslana's act has gone missing (officially she has been frostened at Maidan, which didn't stop her from doing live interview hours before the show on Russian radio). I don't even remember any of the similar stories before when the act has been rehearsed throughout the week and does not perform on the final show. They should have given kids a chance to perform even without her, it's a shame they didn't, since it was the best act of the whole show. I've been very disappointed with this.
All in all - a fairly good organization of the show in the capital of Ukraine. Main problem remains - there is almost no audience for it (we have about 100 times lower visitors rate compared to adult ESC, and I'm sure that total viewing rate will drop compared to 2012 with Russia switching show to children channel first of all) and thus it is likely that next year JESC will continue it's everlasting fight for survival. Especially if some giant countries like Russia drop out - their delegation representatives have sounded very pessimistic about the participation next year. The fact that all small countries have finished at the bottom doesn't add optimism regarding to their participation for next year too.
Anyway, the week has been great and enjoyable, and I'm very thankful to the wonderful 3 team members we had: Irysia, Samira and Paulik for their assistance. Some of us will be back to report from Copenhagen next May.
Thanks for all delegations for their huge cooperation, all of them were really friendly and helpful, there has been no single one not eager to help us with anything we needed.
We also thank all fans for staying with us and being the driving force of our coverage this year.
